DUSHKU: “GLOBAL SPORTS MENTORING PROGRAM”, A LIFETIME EXPERIENCE

  • DUSHKU: “GLOBAL SPORTS MENTORING PROGRAM”, A LIFETIME EXPERIENCE
7 November 2017

The Acting Secretary of the Kosovo Basketball Federation (KBF), Elvira Dushku, from September 24 to October 31, 2017, has been staying in the United States under the Global Mentoring Program.

Dushku has represented KBF and Kosovo as a whole in this program, among 15 countries from around the world: Brazil, Palestine, Nigeria, Kosovo, France, India, Peru, Taiwan, Belgium, Venezuela, Uganda, Bolivia, South Korea and Morocco.

In the first week of the program, all participants stayed together in Washington, while in the second week they all attended the EspnËomen Summit in Santa Ana, Los Angeles, while the last three weeks each participant traveled to, while KBF' s Secretary General, Elvira Dushku, was assigned to San Antonio, where she stayed at the NBA's five- time champions San Antonio Spurs. Dushku’ s Mentor  was Laura Dixon, Director of Foreign Relations at Spurs & Sport & Entertainment.

It should be noted that Dushku has become part of this program after a successful interview with the US Embassy in Pristina, which then proposed her to the program's executives (GSMP), where she also had to go through some interviews and then was chosen to be part of this program aimed at empowering women through sports.

This is the sixth year of the "Global Mentoring Sports Program", and the Washington State Department regards it as one of the most valuable programs it has invested in the last few years.

Elvira Dushku, Acting Secretary General of BFK:

"During the six weeks I've stayed in the United States, I've had the opportunity to meet a lot of influence people in the sport world and also people that with their experiences and inspiration  have made me feel even more powerful when I came back to my work. The fact that I have gone as a former basketball player and as Acting Secretary General of the Federation as strong as we are, has been a great reason for me to be very active in all phases this program.

I also had the great fortune to have a mentor like Laura Dixon, who for three consecutive weeks has taught me many things that will certainly go a long way in the career. At the same time being a part of a big family as is the famous San Antonio Spurs team means a lot and this is to be highly valued.

At the end of the program, each of the participants had to introduce an Action Plan to Project Leaders, State Department, Mentors, sponsors, etc.

My Action Plan has to do with giving the girls the opportunity to practice basketball through the Federation and in cooperation with municipalities, primary schools and parents of small places (eg villages). I am very dedicated to continue working even harder and with greater willpower to empower women through sports, in this case basketball.

I am very grateful to the US Embassy in Pristina and FBK that have given me this opportunity to be part of a program that is a great life experience. I promise that this experience I gained in this great program I will share it with my basketball colleagues. "
